Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Taxi Licences.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

272 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide details at 5 December 2000 on the number of application forms issued for taxi licences in Dublin; the number of applications returned under the new deregulation system; the number of new taxi drivers on the roads in Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28226/00]

The granting of taxi and wheelchair accessible taxi licences is the responsibility of individual local licensing authorities to which applications for taxi licences are made.

These licensing functions are administered in the Dublin taximeter area by Dublin Corporation. While detailed information regarding recent taxi licence applications in Dublin is not directly available to my Department, I understand that strong interest in obtaining new taxi licences is being demonstrated in Dublin and all of the main taximeter areas. I am advised that some 900 new applications for taxi or wheelchair accessible taxi licences had been received by Dublin Corporation by early this week and that some 750 conditional offers of licences had been made.
