Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

281 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Clare County Council is awaiting approval for the Scariff preliminary report which was submitted in early 1998; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that the Lough Derg report on pollution highlighted the need for the Scariff scheme to be updated urgently; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28385/00]

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the Scarriff sewerage scheme. The scheme was introduced to my Department's water services investment programme this year as a project to advance through planning. The preliminary report on the scheme is under consideration in the Department and will be dealt with as quickly as possible.

Ceist:

282 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the urgent requirement by Kilkee Town Commissioners, County Clare for a waste water treatment plan in order that the adverse publicity which this holiday resort received recently on national television might be eliminated by setting up a new plan before the 2001 tourist season. [28386/00]

A brief for Kilkee sewerage scheme was submitted to my Department in January 1999 but has not been approved.

The scheme was fifth on the list of schemes submitted by Clare County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake a fresh assessment of the need for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessment. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the Water Services Investment Programme, 2000-02, announced in July. Given the priority rating afforded to the scheme by the council, the level of competing demand and the funding available, it was not possible to include it in the programme at that time.
