Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

John Perry

Ceist:

356 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the reason Sligo Northside Community Sports and Leisure Centre scored less in 2000 in the project assessment report compared to 1999 under the sports capital programme; if he will clarify the difference; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the dedicated committee is particularly disappointed as it has been working on the project for five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28241/00]

Following the public advertising of the sports capital programme for 2000, in excess of 1,600 applications were received, including an application from the organisation in question. All of the applications were assessed in accordance with the assessment criteria outlined in the guidelines, terms and conditions governing the programme.

Following this assessment the organisation in question was unsuccessful and this decision, together with a copy of the assessment conducted of the application, were conveyed by my Department to the organisation in a letter dated 17 July 2000. My Department also wrote in similar terms to the organisation on 3 September 1999 regarding its application under the 1999 programme.

Each annual round of allocations is based on a completely separate application and assessment process and there may be variations in the scoring awarded to an individual project from one year to the next having regard to the guidelines, terms and conditions and, in the case of the year 2000, documentary evidence to support the information contained in application forms.

I intend to advertise the sports capital programme for 2001 later this month. In the event that the organisation submits an application under that programme it will be considered in accordance with the guidelines, terms and conditions which will be issued with the application forms.
