Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

371 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the circumstances regarding school transport to a special school for a person (details supplied) in County Cork; his views on whether transport to school for this person by way of the public service bus is inappropriate; if he will make arrangements for the immediate employment of a supervisor; and if in view of the fact that this student is not attending any school presently due to inadequate transport arrangements he will make a statement on the matter. [28253/00]

I am aware of the case to which the Deputy refers.

I understand that arrangements have now been made under which the student in question will be accommodated on his usual special school transport service with effect from Wednesday, 6 December 2000.

My Department has allocated funding to facilitate the appointment of escorts on all special school transport services, including the service in question. However, I understand that difficulties have been encountered to date in securing the services of an escort on the particular route in question. Efforts to recruit a suitable escort are continuing.
