Minister for Education and Science
if, following the announcement by the Taoiseach earlier in 2000 of the provision of 11 sports halls to be located in schools serving disadvantaged areas as defined by boundaries of drug task forces, he will indicate the schools so selected; the position in each case regarding tender and construction; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following schools have been selected for the development of multi-purpose sports hall facilities:
–St. Michael's Secondary School, Finglas,
–Senior College Ballyfermot,
–Pearse College, Crumlin,
–St. Vincent's Secondary School, Cork,
–Killinarden Community School, Tallaght,
–Collinstown Park Community College, Clondalkin,
–Firhouse Community College, Tallaght,
–Pobalscoil Iosolde, Palmerstown,
–Inchicore Vocational School.
–Christian Brothers Secondary School, James's Street,
–St. David's CBS , Artane.
In the case of Christian Brothers secondary school, James's Street, and in the case of St. David's in Artane, I understand that difficulties, outside of the control of my Department, have been encountered as a result of which halls at these schools cannot proceed. Consideration is currently being given to possible alternative locations for these two halls.
In the case of the proposal to locate a hall at Senior College Ballyfermot, it emerged that a drainage pipe traverses the proposed site rendering the site unsuitable for development. City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee and Dublin Corporation are working to identify an alternative site in this general area.
In the case of Firhouse community college, Collinstown Park community college and Pobalscoil Iosolde, planning applications have been lodged with the relevant local authorities. In each case, further information has been sought by the local authorities and this information is being reviewed and addressed by the design teams appointed to plan each hall.
In the case of St. Vincent's secondary school, Cork, a planning application was lodged with the local authority. Currently, negotiations are occurring involving the school's design team and the local authority in this matter.
Notification of a decision to grant planning permission has been issued in the case of St. Michael's secondary school, Finglas and Inchicore vocational school.
A decision to grant planning permission has been issued in the case of Pearse College, Crumlin.
The first phase of the hall for Killinarden community school has been built with planning of the second phase, largely ancillary accommodation, being incorporated into plans for an extension of the school. These latter plans are progressing through the architectural planning process currently.
It is planned to have as many of these halls as possible on site in the early summer of 2001.
