Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

396 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he or his predecessor has met with the IFUT regarding the position of ex-Carysfort staff who are paid on a lower scale for their post-graduate work and who are debarred from promotional opportunities; the proposals he has to resolve this inequity; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28534/00]

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

398 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps he will take in relation to a submission by the Irish Federation of University Teachers regarding the continuing denial of access to promotional opportunities for the redeployed staff of Carysfort College to other universities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28560/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 396 and 398 together.

My predecessor met representatives of the Irish Federation of University Teachers – IFUT – on 24 November 1999 regarding the position of former staff of Carysfort College who were seconded to universities following the closure of the college. The meeting covered a range of issues, including the question of the integration of these staff into the universities and their access to promotional opportunities.

At that meeting the IFUT made a proposal on the integration-promotion issue. This proposal, which raises a number of complex issues, has been the subject of discussion between my Department, the Higher Education Authority and the universities concerned. A response to the IFUT on the matter will issue shortly.
