Vol. 528 No. 2

Written Answers. - Institutes of Technology.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

232 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 377 of 14 November 2000, the action he is taking to avoid industrial action among TUI members in Limerick Institute of Technology; if he will exercise his powers under section 20 of the Regional Technical College Act to investigate this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29965/00]

Under the terms of the Regional Technical College Acts, matters relating to examinations are clearly a statutory function of the management and governing body of the institutes of technology. In this regard, I understand that representatives of Limerick Institute of Technology and the TUI have met recently with a view to working towards a mutually acceptable resolution of this matter.

Given the statutory roles and functions of the management governing body, I believe that the matter can and should be resolved locally. I am satisfied that progress is being made in this regard and, in the circumstances, I do not intend to intervene.
