Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

119 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance his proposals to amend the pension schemes of State bodies, in order that the relatives of a single person who dies in service will receive a death-in-service benefit; his proposals to amend the schemes in order that a single person may nominate the person(s) who should be beneficiary(ies) following their death. [30327/00]

Most public sector pension schemes provide that the death gratuity is payable to the estate of the deceased person, while the spouse's pension, if any, is payable to the legal spouse. The question of nominating a beneficiary to receive the death benefit was one of a wide range of issues examined by the Commission on Public Service Pensions. I have recently received the Commission's final report and I am making arrangements for its publication. The Government intends to make formal decisions on the commission's recommendations – including any relating to death benefits – once it has had an opportunity to consider the report in detail.
