Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Security of the Elderly.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

191 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork has not received any decision on an application he made for a grant towards securing his home under the security for the elderly scheme. [30183/00]

My Department has, since 1996, operated the scheme of community support for older people, the purpose of which is to provide funding for initiatives to improve the security and social support of vulnerable older people. This funding is provided by way of grant aid to voluntary groups and organisations who have undertaken to identify those elderly people in need of assistance under the scheme. One of the features of the scheme is that voluntary groups apply to the Department on behalf of individuals.

The individual referred to in the Deputy's question sought assistance under the 2000 scheme of community support for older people through a voluntary group. I can confirm that the application submitted by this group on behalf of some 409 individuals, has been approved and arrangements have been made to issue payment. The allocation represents 90% of the total amount sought and is the maximum funding payable under the scheme.

Question No. 192 withdrawn.
