Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Archaeological Sites.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

197 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if an archaeological assessment report has been received by Dúchas from Galway County Council in relation to the extension of Drumacoo cemetery, Ballinderreen, County Galway; and if Dúchas will deal with the report when received as a matter of urgency. [30221/00]

No archaeological assessment report has been received from Galway County Council in respect of the proposed extension of Drumacoo Cemetery, Ballindereen, County Galway, but Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department has been notified of the proposal by Galway County Council. Dúchas is concerned about the adverse impact of the current proposals on this national monument and is of the view that any proposed extension of the graveyard should be located at a distance from the site in order to avoid disturbance of archaeol ogical remains and to minimise visual impacts on national monuments in the area. Dúchas has conveyed this view to Galway County Council.
