Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Irish Hospital Sweepstakes.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

51 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the settlements to date for eligible ex-staff of the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes under legislation passed earlier in 2000; the number of cases that have been finalised and paid; the number of cases that are still being processed; the final number of settlements there will be; if she will clarify the delay with regard to a case (details supplied) in Dublin 8; and when a settlement will be made in this regard. [30384/00]

The Hospitals' Trust (1940) Limited (Payments to Former Employees) Act, 2000 allows for payment of a lump sum of £20,000 each to certain former employees who had been employed in the company for a period of not less than two years which was a period of continuous employment and continued to be so employed on 1 November 1986 or later.

Since the Act was passed in July last, the number of eligible applications that have been finalised and paid is 139. A further four eligible applicants will be paid before Christmas. Some 12 applications are still being processed and the documentation is awaited from these applicants.

With regard to the person concerned, the committee established under the Act has reviewed his application. Much correspondence with the personal representative was necessary in this case to seek to establish the relevant facts. The committee found that his application is ineligible for the payment because it does not meet the requirements of the Act. In particular, there is insufficient evidence to meet the requirement of being employed by Hospitals' Trust (1940) Limited on 1 November 1986 or later. In the circumstances, his application has been refused. He will be notified of the refusal of his application within the next few days.

The Act provides that any refusal may be appealed within 21 days of the receipt by him of the notification.
