Vol. 528 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

66 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will request Iarnród Éireann to consider putting a shuttle service (details supplied) in place from Mullingar, County Westmeath to Maynooth, County Kildare which would return on a frequent basis to facilitate commuters from this area travel to their place of employment; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [30129/00]

I have no statutory function in relation to this matter which is a day to day function of the board.

However, I can say that Iarnród Éireann has informed me that while they have no plans to provide a shuttle service between Mullingar and Maynooth, it is planned to provide an additional peak period train from Mullingar to Dublin from early next year.

Bus Éireann also currently operates 13 services daily in both directions on the Mullingar-Dublin route which serve Maynooth. This equates to a frequency in the region of a bus every one hour to one hour 15 minutes. The frequency of Bus Éireann services between Mullingar and Dublin has increased by 33% since July 1999.
