Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Seal Cull.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

204 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the form a seal cull takes when authorised by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1910/01]

As I previously indicated to the House, I have no direct function in relation to seals which are a protected species under the terms of the Wildlife Acts administered by the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. In particular, I have no authority or remit in relation to the culling of seals. Culls may only be undertaken on the basis of statutory permits issued by the national parks and wildlife service which should be in a position to advise the Deputy further on the form that seal culls may take.
