Vol. 531 No. 4

Written Answers. - Parents for Justice.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

52 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on the concerns of Parents for Justice as expressed in correspondence (details supplied). [5211/01]

At a recent meeting with Parents for Justice my officials and I undertook to contact Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children concerning the issues raised in the correspondence to which the Deputy refers. This contact has been established and I am informed that the hospital is carrying out ongoing inquiries both internally and externally in order to provide a comprehensive response to the questions raised.

The Deputy will also be aware that on foot of a Government decision it was decided to conduct an inquiry to review all post mortem examination policy, practice and procedure in the State since 1970, and in particular as it relates to organ removal, retention, storage and disposal by reference to prevailing standards both in and outside of the State and related matters. The chairman of the inquiry, Ms Anne Dunne, SC, published a public notice in the national press on 23 February 2001 indicating that the inquiry had commenced its work.

Question No. 53 answered with Question No. 41.
