Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Rage.

Ceist:

194 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps he has taken to counter the growing problem of road rage and physical violence associated with driving. [7220/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, while the Road Traffic Acts, 1961-1995, provide for a broad range of offences, there is no specific provision for dealing with the term ‘road rage'. As the Deputy may be aware, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government is responsible for road traffic legislation. The Garda authorities have assured me that the high priority given to enforcement of the road traffic laws will continue, with a primary aim of reducing the high rate of accidents and of bringing home to motorists the need to exercise due care and consideration for other road users.

In relation to the issue of violence, the Criminal Justice (Public Order ) Act, 1994 and the Non-Fatal Offences against the Person Act, 1997 contain provisions which may apply to the types of incidents envisaged by the Deputy.
