Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

232 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the degree to which current school places and facilities at primary and second level exist in Clane, County Kildare to meet requirements; the degree to which current or proposed facilities exist to fulfil this need at present and for the foreseeable future; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7205/01]

I have been informed by my officials that there is sufficient classroom accommodation in the existing schools in Clane to meet current demand.

Since the Deputy last raised the question of primary school accommodation in Clane, a report on the accommodation requirements in St. Patrick's boys' national school has been received from the local schools inspector. This report, in conjunction with the school's application for additional accommodation, is currently being examined and a decision in the matter will be issued shortly to the board of management.

With regard to post-primary provision, the position is that an extension to Scoil Mhuire community school is currently at the final stages of construction and, when completed, will bring the enrolment capacity of the school to 850 pupils. Current enrolment is 740 pupils.

My Department will continue to monitor school accommodation requirements in Clane with a view to addressing any emerging additional need in a timely manner.
