Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - Physical Education.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

49 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the points requirement for entry into the physical education faculty at the University of Limerick, given that 18 of those who graduated in 2000 did not pursue a teaching career in physical education here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6767/01]

The points level required for any specific course is determined by the number of applications for the course, the points received by the applicants and the number of places available on the course. The determination of entry requirements for courses is a matter for third level institutions.

The intake in 2000 to the degree programme in physical education was 44, representing an increase of five places over the previous year. The supply of and demand for second level teachers, including teachers of physical education, is the subject of ongoing review by my Department in consultation with the Higher Education Authority. No approach has been made to the Higher Education Authority by the University of Limerick to increase the intake level. The intake to the programme will be kept under review in the light of identified needs.
