Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

55 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will report on the staff complement of his Department with details of grades and responsibilities; his views on the adequacy of this provision; and the plans he has to increase staffing in view of the backlog of work in several sections of his Department. [6974/01]

A breakdown of the current staffing complement of my Department is set out in the following table. The total excludes staff assigned to the National Educational Psychological Service Agency and the National Council for Educational Awards. The range of responsibilities of staff reflects the functions of the Department as outlined in the statement of strategy.

The Deputy will be aware that Mr. Sean Cromien's report on my Department's operations, systems and staffing needs reflected very clearly and starkly the difficulties faced by my Department in delivering quality services in a highly challenging environment. A high level task force within my Department is preparing a blueprint for implementation of Mr. Cromien's recommendations and I expect to be in a position shortly to bring proposals to Cabinet for significant departmental structural and service delivery reforms.
