Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - Student Support Schemes.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

71 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has to introduce a student loan scheme to ease the burden of part-time work on many third level students to bring Ireland into line with most European Union partners who already operate these schemes. [6975/01]

I announced late last year that I was setting up a special project team to carry out a comprehensive review of every aspect of the maintenance grants and other student supports to ensure their relevance to the needs of present day third level students. This review includes, inter alia, the issue of student loans. In this context, I understand the team will be examining current practice relating to student supports elsewhere.

Issues relating to the implementation of the team's recommendations will be addressed when its report has been completed.
