Ceist:

173 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 22 of 23 November 2000, his Department has received a response from the Department of Defence and the Naval Service regarding proposals to offer an acceptable mechanism for recognising Naval Service engineering qualifications; the further progress which has been made on the issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources (Mr. Fahey):

My Department has not to date received a response to its proposals but I understand that they are being actively considered by the Department of Defence in conjunction with the Naval Service. If the proposals prove acceptable they will offer a mechanism for recognising Naval Service engineering qualifications and at the same time ensure that we can honour our obligations under the International Convention on Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping, 1995.
