In addition to the above, there were three projects involving the roll-out of broadband telecommunications services in County Kerry. With regard to the first project Esat Telecom received a total of £1.5 million in aid for a project costing £3.3 million, which involved the roll-out of fibre optic cable in urban areas around the State. Tralee town was one of these areas. The project commenced in 1999 and was completed towards the end of 2000.
The second project to receive funding was HEAnet, a not-for-profit organisation which delivers managed broadband services to over 30 educational and research institutions throughout the state. HEAnet received a total of £800,000 in aid for a project costing £1.7 million which involved the redesign and upgrade of its then existing network. Tralee Institute of Technology was among the educational-research institutes upgraded. Once again this project commenced in 1999 and was completed towards the end of 2000.
The third project was undertaken by Eircom which invested in the deployment of broadband infrastructure in 75 locations along the west coast. The overall project cost was £10.6 million, of which grant aid comprised £4.5 million. This project commenced in 1999 and was completed in December 2000.
An estimate of the total investment in broadband infrastructure in County Kerry as a result of these three projects is £2.2 million.
