Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Community Care.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

376 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children when he will allocate a grant for the replacement of a roof at the Shandon/North Cathedral Community Centre, 11A Eason's Avenue, Shandon, Cork. [8033/01]

The development of the type of facility referred to by the Deputy is, in the first instance, a matter for the appropriate health board, in this instance the Southern Health Board.

The Southern Health Board has advised me that a wide range of services and activities are planned for this centre, viz., youth club, book club, arts and crafts, bingo, pre-school playgroup, pre-school parents group, adult education, e.g. computer training, and regular clinics by the health board welfare officer and public health nurse.

I am further advised that the overall project has been funded to date as follows:

£

Cork Corporation

25,000

Department of Sport and Recreation

25,000

Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs

10,000

National Millennium Award

7,500

Southern Health Board/Department of Health and Children

164,000

The funding channelled through the Southern Health Board is as follows – national lottery grant in 1999, £50,000, health board contributions in 1998, £5,000, 1999, £9,000, and £100,000 under the national development plan.
An application for national lottery funding from the Shandon-North Cathedral Community Centre has recently been received in my Department and a decision will be taken in the near future. The association responsible for the project has also been advised by the health board that other local and national agencies should be pursued in respect of the cost of the project especially given the contribution of the Southern Health Board to date.
