Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - General Register of Medical Practitioners.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

380 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has requested and received an explanation from the Medical Council on the reason there was a backlog in the issuing of cer tificates of registration to doctors in January and February 2001 and late 2000. [8037/01]

The Medical Council has informed me that registered medical practitioners, whether full, provisional or temporary, were issued with certificates in respect of the entry of their names in the General Register of Medical Practitioners during the current development and application of new IT systems to the Medical Council's administration. A combination of temporary certificates in respect of registration and computerised certificates were issued to doctors during the transition period. Doctors are now receiving computerised registration certificates. While some delay was experienced for technical reasons during December 2000 and running into January 2001, all employing authorities and doctors were advised that registration could be checked directly with the council's office.
