Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Computer Hacking.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

394 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children if his Department's computer system or website has been hacked or if an attempt to hack it has occurred in the past three years; if so, when such an incident took place; the measures which have been put in place to protect against hacking; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8189/01]

It is not possible to determine if attempts at hacking the departmental computer systems have taken place over the last three years. We have no evidence to suggest that the Department's computer systems have been hacked and stringent measures have been put in place to ensure that a high level of computer security exits at all times. The Department hosts its various websites separate to its internal network as a further security measure. We have no reason to believe that these sites have been compromised. The Department's network is protected by industry standard firewall technology which ensures that all external access points of contact are routed through these firewalls. These measures are reviewed on an on-going basis.
