Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Network.

John Gormley

Ceist:

450 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason he signed the orders giving the go ahead for a new Westlink bridge, in view of the fact that the bridge does not include a safe segregated cycle and pedestrian route as promised in the Fingal county development plan; if he will insist that this is put in place before the bridge is given the go ahead as planned; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8217/01]

On 13 December 2000 I approved the proposal for a second Westlink bridge as a motorway which will form part of the M50. I also specified a number of modifications to be incorporated in the project in the interests of noise abatement and landscaping.

Section 43(4)(a) of the Roads Act, 1993, prohibits the use of motorways generally by pedestrians and pedal cyclists. Accordingly, it would not have been possible to provide for modification of the Westlink proposal in relation to the matters referred to in the question.
