Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

John Gormley

Ceist:

487 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if the laneway adjacent to the bus station on the Ringsend Road and leading into the docklands is owned by Dúchas; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that this laneway is now derelict and that the gate has become an eyesore; the plans she has in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7691/01]

The laneway adjacent to the bus station on Ringsend Road and leading to Charlotte Quay on Grand Canal Dock is owned by CIE. I understand that Waterways Ireland has a right-of-way over this area. Accordingly, the Deputy might wish to contact either body in relation to the condition of the laneway.

It should be noted that Waterways Ireland, a North/South implementation body for inland waterways, was established on 2 December 1999 on foot of the British-Irish Agreement and was assigned the functions of management, maintenance, development and restoration of certain inland navigable waterways systems throughout the island, principally for recreational purposes.
