Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Subtitled Programmes.

John Gormley

Ceist:

504 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands her views on whether RTE programmes should be subtitled for those who are hard of hearing and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8170/01]

I have no statutory function in RTE programming matters. The issue raised by the Deputy is a matter in the first place for the RTE Authority.

On the general issue of the enjoyment of television programmes by the deaf and hard of hearing, I refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 134 of 8 March 2001 relating to relevant provisions of the Broadcasting Bill 1999, which has now been signed into law.
