Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Transport.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

560 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of Garda Síochána cars; the make of all cars currently in use; and the age of each car. [8196/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are currently a total of 1,355 cars in the Garda fleet and that the average age of the car fleet is two years.

While there are cars in excess of this average age in the car fleet, I am also informed that they are not used as patrol cars. They are utilised on special inquiries – i.e. drugs investigations, missing persons investigations, murder investigations etc. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that every effort will be made to replace the older vehicles this year.
As the detailed information sought by the Deputy is quite lengthy, I am arranging to have it forwarded to him under separate cover in the next few days.
