Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Third Level Scholarships.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

688 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science the number and scope of scholarship schemes for access to third level education operated by secondary schools; the criteria attaching to such scholarships schemes; the eligibility criteria governing access to such schools; the requirements for promulgation of such schemes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8225/01]

I understand the Deputy is referring to the three Irish scholarship schemes operated by my Department which provide a total of 50 third level scholarships annually, on the basis of results obtained in the leaving certificate examination.

The scheme of third level scholarships for students from the Gaeltacht provides 15 scholarships to students from the Gaeltacht who have, among other things, been educated through Irish and reached a certain minimum standard in the leaving certificate examination.

The unrestricted scheme of Irish third level scholarships provides 15 scholarships to students who have, among other things, attended an all-Irish second level school and reached a certain minimum standard in the leaving certificate examination.
The restricted scheme of Irish third level scholarship provides 20 scholarships to students who have, among other things, attended an all-Irish second level school and reached a certain minimum standard in the leaving certificate examination and who intend to pursue approved third level courses through the medium of Irish.
My Department issues details of the schemes and application forms to the relevant second level school authorities in the Gaeltacht and to all-Irish schools elsewhere, for distribution to leaving certificate students. Students may also contact my Department directly for information and application forms.
I will arrange for copies of the three scholarship schemes, with conditions and criteria, to be forwarded to the Deputy.
