Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

67 Mr. Hogan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if all application forms for work permits are accompanied by an appropriate explanatory document setting out essential elements of Irish employment rights legislation and protection for workers designed and produced in various languages. [6985/01]

My Department is, at the moment, in the process of reviewing the administrative procedures for the issue of work permits so as to better protect the employment rights of the immigrant workers concerned. For example, we will shortly be amending the work permit application form to seek additional details from the employer concerned such as the wages proposed for the job or jobs in question, number of hours worked, etc., to check compliance with the relevant labour legislation. This will also have to be signed by the prospective employee to confirm that he/she accepts these terms.

In addition we are arranging for the preparation of a short explanatory document setting out the essential elements of Irish employment rights legislation and protections for workers, which will be presented in various languages.
