Vol. 534 No. 5

Written Answers - Citizenship Applications.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

188 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if and when an application by a person (details supplied) in County Kildare for Irish citizenship will be considered; if dual citizenship is attainable at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11215/01]

I have been informed that there is no record in the immigration and citizenship division of my Department of an application for Irish citizenship having been received from the person referred to by the Deputy. Based on the information contained in representations received from the Deputy, it appears that the person referred to is eligible to make a declaration of post-nuptial citizenship on foot of his marriage to an Irish citizen and I have asked my officials to send the appropriate forms to him.

Due to the various procedures involved in processing a declaration of post-nuptial citizenship, together with the high number of applications being received, the average processing time is approximately 12 months. The acquisition of Irish citizenship is not contingent on the renunciation of the citizenship of another jurisdiction. However, the Deputy should be aware that persons who obtain Irish citizenship may, as a result, lose or be at risk of losing their existing citizenship.
