Vol. 534 No. 5

Written Answers - Legal Aid Service.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

37 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the average waiting time for consultation with a solicitor at each of the Legal Aid Centres; if it is intended to increase the income limits for legal aid; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11004/01]

I can inform the Deputy that the Legal Aid Board does not routinely record information relating to an average waiting time for people seeking a consultation with a solicitor. However, it does record the length of time the person longest on the waiting list has waited. The following tabular statement shows the average longest waiting time for those seeking the board's services.

I can confirm to the Deputy that the criteria used to determine financial eligibility under the Civil Legal Aid Act, 1995, is at present being reviewed by my Department. This review is being carried out in consultation with the Legal Aid Board.
