Vol. 534 No. 5

Written Answers - Road Traffic Accidents.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

64 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number and percentage of accidents in which engineering issues were contributory factors, as established by the review of all fatal and serious injury traffic accidents in the Dublin metropolitan region for the period 1997 to 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10852/01]

In general details of road traffic accidents throughout the State reported to the Garda are forwarded by the Garda to the National Roads Authority which compiles and publishes a report entitled, Road Accident Facts, Ireland.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that in March 2000, a review of all fatal and serious traffic accidents which took place in the Dublin metropolitan region in 1999 was completed by the Garda. While the review as mentioned in my reply of 15 November 2000 commented on the trends evident from the 1997 to 1999 period, the analysis which examined the primary cause of each accident was confined to 1999. I understand that the review found that engineering and environment issues were found to be the primary cause of only a small percentage of accidents. I understand that the group recommended that extra signage, road realignment, maintenance and road markings-traffic calming measures would have an important role to play in preventing such accidents.
