Vol. 535 No. 2

Written Answers - Training Schemes.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

137 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the training schemes which are operated by FÁS or other agencies to have workers available when work comes on stream on the Mayo-Galway gas pipeline project. [12551/01]

FÁS, the training and employment authority, operates a range of schemes which would be relevant in providing the skills involved in the implementation of a project of this type. These primarily relate to craft skills which are catered for through the apprenticeship system, and other skills such as engineering and mechanical skills. While the decision to provide training courses specific to this undertaking is a matter for the board of FÁS, I understand that a course in advanced welding is being provided by FÁS in Ballina to cater for anticipated skills requirements arising from the project.

In addition to the foregoing, FÁS through its employment services division would be in a position to assist in matching job seekers with employment opportunities arising from the project.
