Vol. 535 No. 2

Written Answers - Garda Investigations.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

197 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the status of the Letterfrack, County Galway investigation; the expected completion date; the number of current Garda Síochána inquiries into abuse in residential centres here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12495/01]

I am informed by Garda authorities that as a result of the investigation referred to by the Deputy, between July 2000 and January 2001 a total of 19 files regarding nineteen suspects have been forwarded to the law officers for directions. I understand that no decision has yet been given in respect of any of those files.

I understand that it is difficult to predict a completion date, as further complaints are being received from time to time. The Garda is currently processing five complaints, which have been received since the above nineteen files have been completed. In addition, since the exhumation of the remains of the late William Delaney on the 18 April 2001, a number of former inmates of Letterfrack have contacted the Garda and indicated that they wish to make statements regarding abuse they suffered.

It has not been possible in the time available to obtain the total number of current Garda inquiries into residential centres here but I will contact the Deputy when the information becomes available.
