Vol. 535 No. 2

Written Answers - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

217 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he plans improvements to the pupil teacher ratio at primary and second level; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12368/01]

In accordance with the provisions of the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, PPF, an additional 200 posts will be created at second level in the 2001-2002 school year. This increase in posts, combined with an anticipated fall in enrolments, will result in a reduction in the pupil-teacher ratio, PTR, in the sector.

An additional 350 posts are being created at primary level for the 2001-2002 school year under the terms of the PPF. In addition the posts arising under the demographic dividend are being retained. Posts will continue to be allocated for pupils with special needs in accordance with agreed criteria.

Between the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 school years an additional 550 posts will be allocated to primary schools under the terms of the PPF programme. The allocation of these additional posts will further reduce the PTR in primary schools.
