Vol. 535 No. 2

Written Answers - State Examinations.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

99 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether the junior certificate examination is adequate relative to the junior certificate curriculum. [12280/01]

My Department's document entitled The Junior Certificate – Issues for Discussion sets out the limitations of the present junior certificate examination. In particular, the strong focus on a model of terminal, written assessment limits the capacity to fully realise the objectives of the curriculum.

Following the publication of this document, my Department and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment undertook a process of consultation in relation to the future shape of the junior certificate. Following the conclusion of that process the NCCA is finalising proposals for a developmental initiative in this vitally important area.
