Vol. 535 No. 2

Written Answers - School Staffing.

John Perry

Ceist:

112 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teachers at second level nationally and in County Galway from September 2000 for which pay provisions have been made in budget 2001; and the way in which this compares with the numbers of teachers for year 1999 and the projected September 2001 numbers. [12334/01]

Provision was made in the budget 2001 for some 24,550 wholetime teacher equivalents in ordinary second level schools in the 2000-01 school year. This compares with a figure of some 23,650 wholetime teacher equivalents for the 1999-2000 school year.

The number of wholetime teacher equivalents allocated to second level schools in County Galway in the 2000-01 and 1999-2000 school years was 498 and 474 respectively.

In accordance with the provisions of the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, 200 additional posts will be allocated to second level schools for the 2001-02 school year. No decision has been taken in relation to the actual allocation of these posts and, in the circumstances, I am not in a position at present to indicate how many of the posts will be allocated to schools in County Galway.
