Vol. 535 No. 2

Written Answers - School Staffing.

John Perry

Ceist:

118 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teachers at primary level nationally and in County Galway from September 2000 for which pay provision has been made in budget 2001; and the way in which this compares with the numbers of teachers for the year 1999 and projected September 2001 numbers. [12335/01]

The information requested by the Deputy is outlined in the following table.

School Year

Number of Primary Teaching Posts Nationally

Number of Primary Teaching Posts in County Galway

1999-2000

21,850*

1,213*

2000-2001

22,300*

1,247*

2001-2002

22,650*

1,270*

*These figures may increase if schools encounter an increase in enrolment in September 2001 and are sanctioned additional posts under "developing school" criteria or if additional posts are sanctioned for special needs pupils in schools.
The figures for the 2000-01 school year refer to the current position.
An additional 350 posts are being created at primary level for the 2001-02 school year under the terms of the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness. In addition the posts arising under the demographic dividend are being retained, although the number of pupils is declining.
Question No. 119 answered with Question No. 97.
