Vol. 536 No. 4

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

132 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the position regarding the implementation of measures to alleviate the flooding problem at Hazelhatch, Celbridge, County Kildare; if all inquiries, discussions and negotiations preparatory to implementation of the works involved have been concluded; when it is expected that the project will be competed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14458/01]

The Commissioners of Public Works are currently making alterations to the design of the Shinkeen stream drainage scheme which will alleviate flooding at Hazelhatch, Celbridge, County Kildare. These amendments, which arose as a result of the observations submitted by the general public and landowners in the area following the exhibition of the scheme in December 2000, include channel improvements, channel realignment, bridge replacements and ancillary works such as fencing, spoil treatment, environmental mitigation measures and are designed to afford protection against a 100 year flood event rather than the 50 year flood protection originally proposed.

Preparatory works on the scheme documentation required to have the scheme confirmed and advanced to works stage are being progressed within the severe constraints imposed by the current foot and mouth disease crisis. In the latter regard and all going well, it is envisaged that the scheme might reach works stage in July and be substantially completed by the end of the year.

[14461/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 133 to 135, inclusive, together.

The Commissioners of Public Works have been in contact with and requested details from Kildare County Council in relation to flooding in various locations in County Kildare in November 2000 including those at Maynooth and Leixlip, as well as any other reports and historical data relating to flooding in general in the county. In that regard it is understood that Kildare County Council has examined a number of flooding problems in the county and that reports for dealing with these in the short and medium term have been or are being commissioned. On receipt of the relevant information, the commissioners will liaise with the council with a view to determining how best to deal with the flooding problems identified.
In the circumstances, and pending receipt of the reports, it is not possible to give any commitments regarding the implementation of flood alleviation measures for individual areas in the county.
