Vol. 536 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

204 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he proposes to extend the capacity of Malahide community school to accommodate 1,200 pupils; if so, the plans he has to approve the construction of a new two storey structure which is the preferred option of the board of management and parents of the school, particularly given the limited open space available on the school campus. [14400/01]

The building unit of my Department has prepared a schedule of overall accommodation for Malahide community school based on a long-term projected enrolment of 1,200 pupils.

In line with public procurement procedures, my Department recently advertised in the Official Journal of the European Communities for the appointment of a full design team, i.e. an architect, quantity surveyor, structural engineer and mechanical and electrical engineer, for the re-development of the school. The decision as to whether to proceed with a new two storey building will be taken as part as of stage 1 of the architectural planning process in order to allow the design team, when appointed, full scope in the architectural planning of the project, subject to the financial norms which my Department applies to this type of project.
