Vol. 536 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

205 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the current procedure in place for the provision of substitution arrangements for absent teachers in secondary schools; his plans to improve matters; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14401/01]

Paid substitution is currently provided for the following approved teacher absences in secondary schools: certified sick leave, maternity leave, adoptive leave, parental leave, force majeure leave, compassionate leave, jury service, membership of National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, NCCA, membership of course committees established by the NCCA, conduct of Department of Education and Science oral examinations and examination conferences organised by the Department of Education and Science.

A claim for paid substitution for all approved absences is currently before the Teachers Conciliation Council. As matters before the council are solely for the council it would be inappropriate for me to comment at this stage.
