Vol. 536 No. 4

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 31 from Deputy Joe Higgins. I call on Deputy Higgins to state the matter.

(Dublin West): Under Standing Order 31, I seek leave to move a motion for the Adjournment of the Dáil on a specific and important matter of public interest which requires urgent consideration, that is, the imprisonment of anti-refuse tax campaigners in Cork, the contrast between their treatment and the amnesties given to wealthy tax evaders in 1988 and 1993, the need to implement an effective waste management strategy which is properly funded by the Exchequer and does not involve refuse charges and the need to immediately release those imprisoned.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
