Vol. 536 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hazardous Substances.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

51 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Finance the progress made to date by the Office of Public Works in the removal of dangerous asbestos from public buildings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14247/01]

To date approximately 1,900 public buildings, including Government offices, Garda stations, schools, heritage buildings and military establishments, have been surveyed by the Office of Public Works to determine the location, type, form and condition of any asbestos material present and the steps necessary to manage the material safely. Arrangements for the commissioning of further surveys will be completed shortly.

Works necessary to deal with the problem are carried out on a priority basis. In all cases so far identified, works have been completed, are in hand or are in the process of being commissioned.
