Vol. 536 No. 4

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

81 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the works which have been carried out to date on the slipway at Killybegs Pier, County Donegal; and the length of time it will take to complete the work. [14352/01]

The following works have been carried out to date on the new slipway at Killybegs Pier: stone filling of the slipway and adjacent boat hardstand; drilling and blasting, using high explosives, a toe trench to provide end of pile restraint for sheet piles due to poor ground conditions; installation to set in toe trench of 95 metres of sheet pile wall so as to provide berthage on eastern face of slipway for smaller fishing vessels; and installation and testing of 66 concrete bearing piles.

Tidal restrictions, poor ground conditions, procurement procedures and some technical difficulties with the bearing pile installation, which have now been overcome, have added to the planned duration for the construction of this project. The estimated completion date for the project is now autumn 2001.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

82 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if a grant of £60,000 has been made available to Meenaghane Pier, Causeway, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14363/01]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that I have recently approved the provision of funding of £45,000 to Kerry County Council towards a total cost of £60,000 for a new slipway and to raise the existing stormwall at Meenogahane Pier, County Kerry under my Department's Fishery Harbours Development Programme for 2001.

David Andrews

Ceist:

83 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans there are for the rehabilitation of the Carlisle Pier, Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14364/01]

As the Deputy is aware, the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company is responsible, under the Harbours Act, 1996, for the management, control, operation and development of Dún Laoghaire Harbour.

I am advised by the company that it considers that any plan for the rehabilitation of Carlisle Pier has to provide access to the general public and following a consultancy procedure there have been several expressions of interest in progressing development along these lines.

Before any decision is made to proceed further, however, it will be necessary for the port com pany to engage in extensive public consultation. Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company has however advised that as of this date no commitment to any specific proposals have been progressed sufficiently to allow the public consultation process stage to proceed.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

84 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the details of all landings at piers (details supplied) in County Donegal for 1999 and 2000 in terms of landed weight and value of demersal, pelagic and shellfish; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14385/01]

The following table sets out details of landings and value for a number of piers in County Donegal for the years 1999 and 2000. The data in respect of 2000 is provisional.

The landings data for the ports of Bunagee and Carrickarory are included in the data for the ports of Glengad and Moville, respectively.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

85 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the income from landing charges at each harbour location where they are levied in County Donegal for the years 1999 and 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14386/01]

In County Donegal, Killybegs Fishery Harbour is the sole harbour for which, under the Fishery Harbour Centres Act, 1968, landing charges are levied by order. The relevant Order is the Fishery Harbour Centres (Rates and Charges) Order, 1990. Other harbours in County Donegal are under the direct jurisdiction of Donegal County Council.

Income generated from landing charges at Killybegs Fishery Harbour for each of the two years in question is:

Year

Income

1999

£441,590 (a)

2000

£165,756 (b)

(a)The £441,590 is inclusive of £291,215 in overdue landing fees eventually paid in August 1999. Receipt of this payment had the effect of artificially inflating the landing charges income at the harbour for 1999. The £291,215 had accumulated due to a campaign of withholding landing charges by the Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation.
(b)January to September, inclusive. (End year figures will be supplied to the Deputy as soon as possible).
