110 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if his attention has been drawn to research by the soil survey and land research centre in Britain which suggests that 2.2 million tons of soil is eroded each year in England and Wales; if any similar research is being carried out here; and if there is evidence that rates of soil erosion are increasing, decreasing or static. In relation to the research work being carried out in England and Wales, it appears that the figure of 2.2 million tonnes stated is an estimate. Some detailed local investigations were carried out here under the Stimulus Fund and under Teagasc's own work programme. Based on aerial photography, erosion is both continuous and progressive on medium and high altitude blanket peats. Erosion on these peats was recorded in the 1960s and this had become intensified when re-examined in 1995.
