Vol. 537 No. 3

Written Answers. - Nursing Commission.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

164 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children the recommendations of the Commission on Nursing which are still outstanding. [16284/01]

As part of the settlement of the nurses' strike in October 1999, agreement was reached between my Department and the Nursing Alliance on a priority action plan for the implementation of core recommendations of the Commission on Nursing during 2000 and 2001. The Government has provided funding of £22 million for initiatives under this action plan. I am arranging for a copy of the first annual progress report of the monitoring committee overseeing the implementation of the commission's recommendations to be forwarded to the Deputy. The membership of the monitoring committee includes representatives of my Department, health service employers and the nursing unions.

A new action plan for the implementation of further recommendations of the commission during 2002 and 2003 has been agreed by the monitoring committee. It is the intention that further action plans will be prepared in close consultation with key stakeholders providing for the implementation of the remaining recommendation of the commission over future years.
