Vol. 537 No. 3

Written Answers. - Traveller Accommodation.

Ceist:

101 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the steps he intends to take arising from the recent report of the monitoring group on the Task Force on the Travelling Community, which found that the number of travelling families on the roadside or in unauthorised sites continues to rise; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15977/01]

The number of Traveller families on the roadside has decreased by 114 from 1,207 in November 1999 to 1,093 in November 2000. The needs of these Traveller families on the roadside or on unauthorised sites are being addressed under the five-year local Traveller accommodation programmes. The implementation of these programmes, which will be in force from 2000 to 2004, should significantly accelerate the provision of accommodation for those Traveller families in need of accommodation.
