Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Army Bands.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

200 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Defence the plans he has to increase the number of public appearances by the Army Bands. [16896/01]

The Army No. 1 Band is located in Dublin and is one of three military brass and reed bands, the other two bands being located at Cork and Athlone. A programme of free public recitals by the Defence Forces bands takes place each year. The scheme operates during the spring-summer period and allows bands to perform in parks and other areas to which the public has free access.

Apart from the above mentioned recitals, the three bands have to perform at various military and State functions and they may also be provided free of engagement fee to qualifying civilian bodies such as festivals, etc. In addition bands may be engaged on a paid basis.

In the circumstances and in view of the necessity for continuous training and rehearsal, I am satisfied that the Defence Force bands appear in public as frequently as is feasible.
