Vol. 537 No. 5

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

255 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Finance if a soil or spoil test will be carried out immediately on the spoil from the bed of the River Nore to determine if it is safe to spread it on the open fields and meadows at Dukes meadows and Riverside Drive, Kilkenny, as part of the flood relief scheme; and his views on the fears expressed by the residents regarding this part of the project. [16524/01]

Preliminary chemical analyses were undertaken on both soils and groundwaters at a series of sample sites in Kilkenny city as part of the site investigations for the Nore River, Kilkenny city, draining scheme to assess, inter alia, the likely contamination regime of dredged materials. This study indicated that the river bed deposits displayed little contamination and concluded that disposal of dredged materials on site should not be a problem. In those circumstances the residents' fears in that regard may be allayed.
